IMU Sustainability Student Club Recycles Old Calendars and Produces Calendars with Seeds

IMU Sustainability Student Club emphasises the importance of re-use by preventing the cutting down of trees. Old calendars are replaced with seeded ones.

IMU Sustainability Student Club continues its social responsibility project started to recycle the waste paper that is collected and sorted within the campus areas of our university. Members of the stuent club organised a hand-made paper workshop on October 18, 2024 in cooperation with the IMU Sustainability Office in order to transform the institutional paper waste in our university into paper with seeds. The workshop, held at the IMU Sustainability Office, was open to the participation of all Istanbul Medeniyet University students, staff and the public. In the workshop, with 15 participants, approximately 400g of waste paper, which was previously distributed to our university staff as calendars and collected at the end of the relevant year , was recycled and turned into 32 pieces of A5-sized new paper.

In the first part of the two-stage workshop, the participants were given theoretical information about paper and traditional Turkish paper production methods. It was pointed out how the flora in Turkey affects paper production and which vegetable fibre sources are used in paper production. In line with the goal of recycling waste paper generated in the campus areas of the IMU Sustainability Student Club, information was given on how waste paper can be recycled with the traditional method. Information was provided about the issues to be considered in the method to be used. In the traditional method to be used in paper production, it was stated that the method to be applied is of great importance especially in terms of resource efficiency , as the traditional method involves much less energy and water consumption compared to factory production, as well as preventing cutting of new trees for consumption.

In the second part of the workshop, new papers were produced by recycling the collected waste paper. In the production phase, sieves produced by the IMU Sustainability Student Club from waste wood materials generated within the campus areas, old waste paper collected from office areas, and flower seeds collected by the community members from natural areas were used. Thus, by recycling waste, a contribution was made to the zero waste policies of our university.
