“Disaster Psychology Seminar Series” was Organized at Our University to Support Mental Health in Disasters

“Disaster Psychology Seminar Series” organized in cooperation with Istanbul Medeniyet University Psychology Department and Psychology Application and Research Center was held online between 4-25 May 2023. The seminars given by Asst.Prof.Dr. Gamze GÜLTEKİN, one of the faculty members of the Department of Psychology. The seminars given by Dr. Gamze GÜLTEKİN, a faculty member of the Department of Psychology, attracted great interest from students and researchers studying in the field of mental health.

In the seminar series organized in four different sessions throughout May, the topics of Scope of Disaster Psychology (May 4), Individual and Society in Disaster Experience (May 11), Post-Disaster Psychosocial Interventions (May 18), Self-Care and Ethical Issues in Fieldwork (May 25) were discussed respectively. In each session, theoretical knowledge on supporting the mental health and psychological well-being of disaster survivors after disasters and practical challenges encountered during fieldwork were discussed.

The seminar series, which aims to provide information on how to understand the psychological effects of disasters such as stress and trauma and the mental illnesses that may be caused by them and how to intervene after disasters, offered an important training opportunity for risk reduction in disasters, especially for mental health professionals who will work in disaster areas. Participants deepened their knowledge in the field of disaster psychology by learning from an important expert in the field and gained important tips on practical field work.
