A Seminar Held by our Department of Art History on the Storage, Restoration, and Conservation of Historical Clothing in Museums

Within the scope of the ‘Medeniyet Meetings: Fashion’ seminar series organized by Asst. Prof. Dr. Csilla BALOGHand Dr. Feray KORUCU YAĞIZ from IMU Department of Art History, an online seminar titled ‘Storage of Historical Clothing in Museums, Restoration and Conservation Methods’ was held on April 30, 2021. The speaker of the event was Asst. Prof. Dr. Ragsana HASANOVA from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.

HASANOVA started her speech by emphasizing that textile works, which are among the cultural heritage works, constitute a large part of many museum collections. In this context, she underlined the importance ofthe storage, restoration and conservation methods for such historical garments. HASANOVA showed textile samples from different museums and talked about the methods of protection and display of textile works in museums. She stated that the restoration and conservation methods of textile works exposed to different deteriorations vary according to the deterioration rate, period and raw material of the work. She further explained with short examples what can be done to protect a damaged artifact and how these are evaluated according to the raw material.
