IMU Biotechnology Student Club, one of the student clubs of our university, held the “Disaster Awareness Day” event online on April 08, 2023. The event was completed in 4 sessions with the participation of 4 expert speakers.
It was stated that the event was organized in order to make the short-term disaster awareness and awareness that our nation has acquired due to the natural disasters experienced in our country, especially the 6 February Kahramanmaraş earthquake, permanent and thus reduce disaster risks.
In the first session of the event, Prof. Alparslan H. KUZUCUOĞLU, a faculty member of Istanbul Medeniyet University, Department of Information and Document Management, in his presentation on “Basic Disaster Awareness”, mentioned that a holistic disaster risk management should be developed at all levels and implemented on cities and housing. Sharing his knowledge and experiences about sustainable building design and urbanization with the participants, KUZUCUOĞLU concluded his speech by talking about the studies carried out at our university on this subject.
In the second session of the event, Prof. Dr. Yaşar EREN, one of the academicians of Konya Technical University Geological Engineering Department, shared his knowledge and experiences about the geological structure of our country, the formation and classification of earthquakes and the processes of earthquakes with the participants with his presentation on “Turkey and Earthquake Reality”.
In the third session of the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cengiz İPEK, one of the academicians of Istanbul Medeniyet University Civil Engineering Department, talked about how building designs should be designed to increase durable buildings in his presentation on “Precautions to be taken against Earthquakes in Buildings”.
In the last session of the event, Exp.Psy. Esra TANRIVERDİ, in her presentation on “Psychological Dimension of Earthquake”, shared her knowledge and experiences with the participants on the scope of disaster psychology created by the earthquake on the society and the individual, how the appropriate approach should be taken to earthquake victims considering their psychology and what kind of psychological support can be provided.
