Disaster Risk Reduction was Discussed at the Seminar “Two Countries, One Goal: Strategies to Prevent Earthquake Disasters” Organized by IMU Civil Engineers Student Club

Organized by Istanbul Medeniyet University Civil Engineers Student Club, “Two Countries, One Goal: Strategies to Prevent Earthquake Disasters” provided important information to the participants, especially civil engineering students, about disaster risk reduction and measures to be taken against earthquakes. Held on March 10, 2025 at the Bankkart Conference Hall of the Central Library, the seminar was attended by Yoshinori Moriwaki, a MSc. Architect, MSc. Civil engineer and earthquake expert.

In the seminar, Moriwaki discussed the differences between Japan and Turkey in terms of precautions against earthquake disasters and effective earthquake strategies. Providing detailed information about the technical and practical measures to be taken before and after earthquakes, Moriwaki advised civil engineering students to be honest and hardworking throughout their professional lives.

During the seminar, differences in engineering education systems and working life in Japan and Turkey were also discussed. Participants had the opportunity to compare the approaches between the two countries, especially in disaster management and urban safety. In the question and answer session, there was an interactive discussion on topics such as earthquake regulations, materials science and new generation construction technologies.

The event, which attracted great interest from our university students, staff and external participants, brought together participants from different disciplines, increased academic and professional interaction and enabled new connections to be established. The event, which raised awareness of the participants against earthquake risks, also offered a free vocational training opportunity for our students from the field of civil engineering.
