Sociology Club of our University organized a workshop called “Uniting Roads (Railroads from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic)” on 14 December 2022, within the scope of the workshop series where the urbanization process of Istanbul was discussed.
The moderator of the workshop, where the effects of railways on the urbanization process of Istanbul were discussed, was Filiz Çullu Aspirin, a member of the club. Various discussion groups were formed in the workshop and the participants actively participated in the event. In the group work, the members of the club touched on the importance of railways in the urbanization process of Istanbul as a metropolis and discussed the historical background of this process. Later, it was stated that the railway constructions, one of the most important turning points in the history of Istanbul, not only facilitated intercity transportation, but also had a great impact on the urbanization process. Finally, it was discussed that thanks to the railways, people from the towns and villages around Istanbul could reach the city more easily and this situation caused the population of Istanbul to increase rapidly.
After the event, positive feedback was received in the surveys conducted among the participants that the event was very useful and informative.
