IMU Sustainability Club Updated Its Policies with the Support of Artificial Intelligence on World Democracy Day

IMU Sustainability Club (IMUSUS) has updated and published “IMU Sustainability Club Anti-Discriminatory Admission Policy”, which aims to eliminate prejudice and discrimination within the club structure and activities; guarantees that all candidates undergo a fair and impartial evaluation and admission process; and guarantees fair and equal treatment in all activities, opportunities and decision-making processes. IMUSUS, which is committed to conducting the admission of both members and event participants without any discrimination based on language, religion, race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, marital status or other personal reasons, has updated its previous policy, which was adopted with the support of artificial intelligence, based on the theme of the International Day of Democracy in 2024, artificial intelligence as a tool for good governance. The club added statements to its policy that anti-discriminatory approaches will be followed in the admission of participants to events.

Res.Asst. Ayça ÇELİKBİLEK, academic advisor of the Club, stated that according to the Sustainable Development Goals Report published by the United Nations in 2024, progress was seen in only 17% of the goals, while progress in one third of the goals had stalled or regressed. For this reason, she emphasized the importance of ensuring that sustainability-related efforts include everyone and that these policies should be developed by examining them in relation to inclusiveness. ÇELİKBİLEK stated that they aim to ensure that all activities such as trainings and workshops carried out within the club provide effective benefits to the Sustainable Development Goals, and for this reason, they have created many policy documents regulating the club activities in order to shape all their activities in line with these principles. ÇELİKBİLEK stated that they update these policy documents from time to time in the light of the knowledge and experience they have gained while carrying out their activities, and explained that they also benefit from artificial intelligence in order to minimize the gaps in policy documents. While stating that artificial intelligence has the potential to increase participation, equality, security and human development, ÇELİKBİLEK pointed out that experts working on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in policy-making processes warned that “if left unchecked” its dangers “could have serious impact on democracy, peace and stability”.

Stating that the theme of the International Day of Democracy for 2024 was determined as artificial intelligence as a tool for good governance, the club members stated that they updated the club policies they prepared about 10 months ago around this theme with both their one-year experience and the support of artificial intelligence. In this context, while creating the club policies of IMUSUS, first of all, the main focus topics were determined, then Artificial Intelligence was asked to prepare a detailed policy text within the framework of these focus points, and finally, IMUSUS Board of Directors, together with the academic advisor of the club, revised these texts according to its own internal structure, the club principles, social principles and the needs of both the institution, Turkey and the world regarding sustainability.
