The book chapter titled “International Migration and Refugee Issue” by Asst.Prof. Cenk BEYAZ from our University’s Department of Sociology has been published.
In the text, various aspects, reasons, and consequences of international migration were discussed. It was emphasized that migration is a topic of academic interest and that Turkey plays a significant role in migration due to its geographical location. The impact of irregular migrants was noted as contributing to the increase in migration movements; millions of people have been prompted to migrate due to reasons such as war, compulsion, and asylum requests.
Considering Turkey’s experience of both being a transit and destination country in terms of migration movements, the book examined migration in a context that transcends national borders. Migration was classified into internal migration and international migration.
The book indicated that the types of migration vary according to the reasons and consequences for migrants. Forced migrations were triggered by factors such as war, terrorism, and natural disasters, while voluntary migrations were driven by economic, social, and other individual reasons.
International migration was described as a complex form of movement shaped by various reasons and outcomes. The dynamics of migration were influenced by the combination of economic, social, and political factors, impacting migrants’ choices and the needs of destination countries.
The concept of refugees and Turkey’s refugee policies were also explained in the text. The existence of temporary protection status for refugees was mentioned, with a specific focus on its application to Syrian refugees. However, it was noted that prolonged temporary protection status could be burdensome, suggesting that Turkey should enhance border controls against irregular migration flows and engage in responsibility sharing.
