Our Faculty of Tourism Drew Attention to the Efforts for the Protection and Sustainability of ‘Turkish Coffee and Tradition’, Which is Included in UNESCO’s ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage List’ with the World Coffee Day Event

The Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Faculty of Tourism, hosted coffee consultant and author Cenk R. GİRGİNOL with his presentation titled ‘Coffee from Soil to Cup’ within the scope of ‘World Coffee Day’ event. Held on November 10, 2023 at Orhanlı Campus of our university, the event was open to the participation of all our students, administrative and academic staff and the public.

In the first part of the event, detailed information was given about the historical development of coffee, traditional cooking and presentation methods of Turkish coffee, and social events in which coffee, one of the symbols of Turkish hospitality, played an important role. It was emphasised that coffee, which is accepted as a part of Turkish cultural heritage, is an indispensable part of literature, music and ceremonies, and it was stated that ‘Turkish coffee and tradition’ was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2013.

Cenk R. GİRGİNOL, in his presentation titled ‘Coffee from Soil to Cup’, gave information about the characteristics of quality Turkish coffee and the tricks of cooking coffee, and drew attention to the activities that can be carried out for the sustainability of coffee culture in order to preserve Turkish coffee culture as a cultural heritage and to enable it to be transmitted between generations. After the speech, our students were presented with Cenk R. GİRGİNOL’s signed book titled Soil to Cup Coffee.

After the event, coffee truffles and cakes prepared by our 3rd year students of the Department of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts under the leadership of Lect.Dr. Sevgül COŞKUN were served to our guests with Turkish coffee.
