Istanbul Medeniyet University Sociology Club organized the event “From Resistance to Power: Women’s Historical Struggle”, which aims to raise awareness on gender equality within the scope of March 8 International Women’s Day. Held on March 17, 2025 at the IMU Young Office on the North Campus, the event focused on the historical development of feminism, different feminist movements and important turning points in the struggle for women’s rights.
In the event, Zeynep BOZBULUT, a 4th year student of IMU Department of Sociology, after explaining the development of feminism, which focuses on women’s emancipation and the struggle for equality, in waves in history and the basic gains achieved in this process, drew attention to the fact that gender inequality negatively affects women in many areas of life such as labor force, education, health and political participation by causing women to be in a disadvantaged position compared to men. BOZBULUT emphasized the importance of empowering women and girls in the struggle for gender equality, increasing women’s employment, eliminating the gender pay gap and bringing women to leading and managerial positions, especially in business life, and also touched upon the issues of gender discrimination and violence against women.
Stating that women’s rights include basic human rights such as education, access to health services, equal rights in the labor market, the right to vote, and protection from violence, BOZBULUT underlined that the struggle for women’s rights is a journey for the empowerment of women and girls and that continuous solidarity is necessary for the gains to be sustainable in this journey.
