Assoc.Prof.Dr. Yıldız AKSOY presented her paper on the relationship between public health and sustainable cities and titled “An Urban Perspective on the Relationship of Public Health and Planning” in the International Online Conference on City Planning and Urban Design CPUD’22 organized virtually by DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center) on April 1st, 2022.
AKSOY presented a brief historical and urban perspective on the relationship between public health and urban planning. She stated that the unhealthy living conditions and cholera epidemics created by the industrial revolution accelerated the establishment of health-oriented modern urbanism, and these developments led to the rebirth of urbanism and the restructuring of the public health problems of the city. AKSOY stated that the COVID-19 pandemic, which is experienced all over the world, once again reveals the importance of public health. She also mentioned that city planning shapes the physical environment that affects urban health and is an important discipline that will strengthen the infrastructure that will form the basis of public health.
AKSOY emphasized that a comprehensive planning is needed for healthier cities and that the physical environment should be developed according to the specified standards by determining basic standards for healthy urban living conditions and healthy housing and urban planning process should include them at every stage.
