An article authored by Res.Asst. Meryem ÖZGÜR of IMU Department of International Relations of the Faculty of Political Sciences titled “Human Dignity in the Context of International Human Rights” was published in the Theoretical Approaches to International Law File of the journal Diplomasi ve Strateji.
In her study, ÖZGÜR examined human dignity in the context of international human rights. In the research, she firstly evaluated the emergence of human dignity and its meaning in international human rights law within the scope of international human rights documents and documents adopted by the United Nations (UN), and laid out the theoretical framework of her research. She then addressed human dignity as a fundamental value of international law and human rights and discussed the importance of its protection on the basis of international peace and security. She stated that the protection of human dignity limits military conflicts, emphasizing the contribution to achieving the goal of a more peaceful society through the protection of human rights.
With her research, ÖZGÜR revealed that war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity are elements that violate human dignity and hinder the international justice system. Emphasizing that there are debates in the literature on the conceptual dimension and legal weight of human dignity, she interpreted human dignity as a right that must be respected and observed, as it is included in international human rights documents and documents of global and regional organizations. Thus, she underlined that protection of human dignity, which is inalienable and inherent to all humanity, is a ‘value’, a ‘status’ or a ‘right’ that limits the occurrence of humanitarian crises in the global arena and that a more just and peaceful world is possible with the protection of human dignity.
