Art History Club Continues to Learn about Istanbul’s Cultural Heritage with the Trip to Yoros Castle

The Art History Club of our university organized a trip to Yoros Castle, which dates back to the Eastern Roman period, located on the hills of Anadolukavağı, on November 13, 2022. The trip was guided by the club  advisor, Res.Asst. Yasin SAYGILI.

During the trip, the group visited Yoros Castle, which is one of the significant symbols of Istanbul and was included in the UNESCO Temporary World Heritage List in 2013. Yoros Castle is located in the Anadolu Kavağı district on the opposite shore of the Bosphorus, and it holds a strategic position. It was constructed during the Byzantine Empire to ensure the security of the Bosphorus.

During the tour, SAYGILI provided detailed information about the history and importance of Yoros Castle, which is a vital part of the cultural heritage. SAYGILI discussed how the castle served different purposes during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods and underwent various renovations throughout time. He explained the details of the historical structures and defense systems within the castle to the participants. Additionally, SAYGILI emphasized the magnificent view of the Bosphorus from the castle, conveying the unique beauty and historical significance of the strait to the participants.

The group also visited the Cevriye Kalfa Fountain located within Yoros Castle. SAYGILI provided information about the history, architectural features, and decorations of the fountain. The participants had the opportunity to explore the aesthetic values of the fountain and gain a better understanding of its historical and cultural context.
