The Human Rights and Freedoms Club of our university organized an awareness campaign regarding cataract disease at our University campuses from December 5th to 9th, 2022.
Under the slogan “If you see, they will see too,” the event began with providing participants with information about cataract disease, with particular emphasis on its negative effects on both human health and daily life. Subsequently, participants were asked to wear glasses that simulate the vision of cataract patients and complete various courses. The courses used in the event aimed to allow healthy individuals to experience the challenges faced by 94 million cataract patients in their daily lives, thereby fostering health consciousness.
Following the completion of the courses, information was provided to participants who were interested in empowering cataract patients, both in Turkey and at the other end of the world, and they were also given information about the institutions to which they can donate to support the patients for their surgery costs. This not only enhanced awareness through the event but also promoted a sense of cooperation and solidarity between healthy individuals and cataract patients who are deemed as visually impaired individuals, with the aim to raise awareness within the society about developing policies toward reducing inequalities and inclusion of these individuals in social and economic life.
