Perspective Student Club Organizes a Trip to Bursa to Raise Awareness about Turkey’s Cultural Heritage

IMU continues to introduce the cultural heritage of Turkey to its students, considering that the first condition of protection is to have knowledge.

Perspective Student Club organized a one-day cultural trip on 10 December 2022, to Bursa, which stands out with its natural beauties and historical significance.

Within the scope of the tour, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, Bursa, which was established on the northwest foothills of Uludağ and is an important city with both natural and cultural heritage sites, was visited. In the city center, the Green Tomb, Muradiye, Tophane, Ulu Mosque, as well as Koza Han and the Inns Area, which are registered as urban protected areas, were visited.

Our students were provided with fruitful information about silkworm breeding and the traditional production of silk for weaving which are included in Turkey’s intangible cultural heritage list in 2022 by UNESCO,  during the tour at Koza Han. Our guide conveyed the information that Turkey is one of the 7 countries in the world in wet cocoon production and the only country that is a seed producer among EU countries, while Bursa is one of the rare places that still produce dry cocoons with traditional methods.

On the other hand, it was pointed out that the amount of production decreased due to many different factors and the effectiveness of this intangible cultural heritage of Turkey gradually decreased.

After the visits in the center, Cumalıkızık, which was established as an Ottoman foundation village at the same time as Bursa and included in the world heritage list by UNESCO in 2014, was visited. During the trip, information was given about the importance of the region as a world heritage site and the process of the village’s being included in the world heritage list was mentioned. The important role of Cumalıkızık in the art sector by hosting many Turkish films and TV series was also mentioned.

The trip ended with a dinner where Bursa’s famous iskender kebab was served.
