The Project Titled ‘’Smart Transportation Index’’ Led by our Faculty Member has been Completed

The project named “Smart Transportation Index,” led by Prof. Dr. Lütfi SUNAR, a faculty member of our university’s Department of Sociology, and supported by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey and Türksat A.Ş., has been completed.

Smart Transportation Systems (STS) applications are rapidly spreading worldwide today. On the other hand, the level of efficiency of these applications and their impact on the quality of urban life are also being researched.

The STS Index developed within the scope of the project has emerged as a result of such a study. In the project, the Turkey STS Index evaluated 23 metropolitan cities in Turkey comparatively with a total of 9 different dimensions and 30 indicators. The most up-to-date quantitative data and objective methods were used in all steps of the index construction process (indicator construction, data processing, weighting, and merging processes). In the project, smart transportation systems in these cities and their reflections on urban life were measured through statistical data.

In the first two sections of the project, which score cities under headings such as smart transportation, smart mobility, and smart city, the meaning and brief history of STS were explained, and STS applications in the world and in Turkey were briefly summarized. In the third section, the smart mobility components of different indices published worldwide were examined in order to create a set of indicators that could serve as a basis for the STS index. In the fourth section, the methodology for constructing the STS index developed within the scope of this project was explained in detail. In the fifth section, a comparative evaluation of the 23 metropolitan cities in Turkey was made according to the developed STS index, and the results were discussed both in terms of areas and indicators and for each city individually. The final section contains a general assessment and recommendations.
