The International Law and Human Rights Law Panel was held on May 23, 2021 by the Ideal Medeniyet Law Student Club.
The event, which brought distinguished scholars together with students, consisted of six sessions including topics such as immigration, immigrant rights, equality, discrimination, state intervention on human rights, and female prisoners rights. The first guest speaker was the head of the Constitutional Law Department of our faculty, Assoc. Prof. Murat Tümay, with his presentation titled “The Conceptual Definition and Historical Development of Human Rights“. He explained the evolution of main human rights documents and the emergence of human rights in international law. Then, in his paper titled “Immigrant Rights and Discrimination in the Context of Universal Human Rights”, Prof. Dr. Bekir Berat Özipek mentioned that refugees have the right to benefit from basic human rights protection without being subject to discrimination, as required by universal law, until they receive state protection.
In her speech titled “Immigration Control at Sea in the Context of Human Rights“, Prof. Dr. Nuray Ekşi criticized the unlawful policies of European States against asylum seekers who want to reach Europe via the Aegean Sea.
In her speech titled “Legitimacy Problems Raised by States’ Human Rights Violations in Terms of International Law”, Dr. Özlem Yücel addressed the problems of legitimacy through the principle of proportionality in the context of the conflict created by the principle of state sovereignty and the rules of human rights.
The program came to an end after Prof. Dr. Nezir Akyeşilmen’s speech titled “Human Rights and Ethics in the Digital World”, in which he touched on the rights to freedom of expression and privacy, which has become a hot topic through the processing of personal data and social media interactions.
