Istanbul Medeniyet University Sustainability Office organized a blood donation event in cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent on June 14, World Voluntary Blood Donors Day. During the donations that lasted all day, our university staff and students donated enough blood to save 65 lives. During the event, our campus community was also informed about the contribution of blood donation to public health and the support it provides to the donor’s cardiovascular health as well as psychological well-being.

June 14th is celebrated every year as the “World Voluntary Blood Donors Day” around the world, as it is the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who invented the ABO blood group system. Its purpose is to celebrate voluntary blood donors who give blood for those in need and to draw public attention to the need for voluntary safe blood. This special day is celebrated every year in our country and around the world with various activities in order to encourage individuals to donate blood by informing them about the importance of regular and voluntary blood donation.

IMU Sustainability Office organized a blood donation event in cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent, one of the most important NGOs working in the field of health in Turkey, and invited our students and staff to give hope and save lives by donating blood on the World Voluntary Blood Donors Day.

On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, between 09:00-18:00 in front of the IMU Ziraat Bank Library building, our staff and students donated blood voluntarily accompanied by the Red Crescent’s medical staff. Our vice rector Prof. Dr. Fatih SARIOĞLU also visited the event and donated blood, and with the donations made by the staff and students of our university, an amount of blood donations that could save 65 lives was provided. During the event, our campus community was also informed about the contribution of blood donation to public health and the support it provides to the donor’s cardiovascular health as well as psychological well-being.

As IMU Sustainability Office, we would like to thank the sensitive members of our campus community who donated blood, giving hope and saving lives.

Blood, whose only source is humans, has been seen as the fundamental symbol of health and life from past to present. Blood, which carries important substances such as oxygen, hormones and proteins to the cells, fights against germs and balances body temperature, clots in case of injury, preventing bleeding and protecting the body.

Blood donation is the collection of blood by blood centers to obtain various blood products from a voluntary and eligible donor. It is a very important process for the supply of this vital substance, the only source of which is human. In addition to its importance for public health, blood donation is also very healthy for the donor. Blood volume and blood sugar are regulated in people who donate blood, toxic substances in the blood are eliminated and new blood cells are created and used in the body. Blood donation is also beneficial for cardiovascular health and psychological well-being. Blood from donors is used for newborn babies, for blood diseases such as anemia and leukemia, for surgeries, and for needs arising from accidents and disasters.
