Art History Club Explores Natural Heritage and Endemic Species in Bolu Abant National Park

As a crater lake formed on Mount Abant, Lake Abant was designated as a “Nature Park” and put under protection as a natural heritage site in 1988 both due to the natural value of the lake and the species richness and biodiversity of the surrounding region.

On January 24, 2022, our University’s Art History Club organized a trip to Bolu Abant Lake National Park, which is under protection as a national park due to its natural heritage. The trip was guided by the club advisor, Res.Asst. Yasin SAYGILI. Through a walk around Lake Abant, the participants had the opportunity to experience the diverse beauty of nature and the natural habitat that houses thousands of species.

Lake Abant is renowned for its ever-changing beauty throughout the four seasons and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Throughout the event, the club members enjoyed a pleasant walk amidst the captivating scenery of the snow-covered nature, immersing themselves in the enchanting atmosphere of Lake Abant. This extraordinary natural setting provided the members of the Art History Club with the opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna in the area through their field trip in Abant Lake National Park. During the trip, the students were given information about the endemic species of the area such as “Abant çiğdemi (Crocus abantensis)”, “Abant yıldızı (Ornithogalum pascheanum)”, Abanttarlakuşu (Corydalis caucasica subsp. abantensis)” and “Abant trout (Salmo trutta abanticus)”, some of which they had the chance to observe. Thus, they acquired significant knowledge as to the importance of the national park as a natural heritage protection site and the approaches to be developed to protect such sites.
