Current Political Developments in the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea Discussed in Their Historical and Legal Framework in the Panel “What’s Happening? Mediterranean and Aegean Dilemma”

Istanbul Medeniyet University Social Academy Club organized a panel titled “What’s Happening? Mediterranean and Aegean Dilemma” on 17 November 2022 at 14:30. Yıldız Technical University Faculty Member Assoc.Prof.Dr. Fuat AKSU, Marmara University Faculty Member Assoc. Prof.Dr. Zuhal MERT UZUNER, Bahçeşehir University Faculty Member Prof.Dr. Viron MATARANGAS and our university’s International Relations Department Member Assoc.Prof.Dr. Özlem YÜCEL have discussed the causes and consequences of the tension on the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts that have been going on for years. The event was held at the Hasan Polatkan Conference Hall of the Ziraat Bank Library of Istanbul Medeniyet University. Approximately 120 listeners attended the panel and the moderator of the panel was IMU International Relations Department Member Assoc.Prof.Dr. Helin SARI ERTEM.

In the panel, which was followed with great interest, the speakers discussed the problems of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean and the existing problems regarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the Mediterranean. AKSU touched upon the problems between Turkey and Greece by detailing the effects of the Mediterranean problem on current politics and society, in particular Cyprus, with its historical dimension, and shared his analysis of current politics over these problems with the audience. MERT UZUNER analyzed the political and social dimension of the Aegean problem, how the historical problems of Turkey and Greece in the Aegean and the Mediterranean were reflected on the people of the two countries and how the people were affected by these problems. In addition, how these problems are reflected in politics was also evaluated by UZUNER. MATARANGAS addressed these problems between Greece and Turkey as a Greek professor and shared how these problems are evaluated by the public sector and governments by mentioning the historical source of the existing problems. In addition, he brought a new perspective to the issue by addressing the Aegean and Mediterranean problems in terms of Greek politics and public opinion. YÜCEL, on the other hand, evaluated the problems of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones in the Aegean and Mediterranean in terms of international law. He explained what kind of deadlocks the problems cause in terms of international law and how legal remedies can be brought to these problems.
