Department of Art History Discussed the Role of Museums in the Protection of Cultural Heritage with the Event titled ‘Art Historians at the Museum’

The Department of Art History of our University organized an event titled ‘Art Historians at the Museum’ on May 23, 2022 at Istanbul Medeniyet University Ziraat Bank Library Lecture Hall. In the event, art historians talked about their experiences and works on digital art, galleries, museology and the art market.

The first speaker of the event was Melike BAYIK, curator from Yeditepe University. In her speech, BAYIK talked about curatorship and collection management in contemporary art and shared with the audience the role of curators in the management and protection of museums and galleries for the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage and the importance of curators in interpreting and managing the collections they are responsible for.

The second speaker of the seminar was art consultant Özhan KAKIŞ. In his speech, KAKIŞ explained the place of digital art as a new genre in the world and the role of NFT in this field in recent years.

The last speaker of the event was gallery manager and art critic Gizem GEDİK, who discussed gallery management and art criticism in contemporary art, talked about the importance of galleries in bringing artworks and cultural heritage to the public and gave information about what can be done to protect this heritage. He then explained the connection between art-artist-art consumer and talked about the artistic production in Turkey in comparison to Europe and the role of galleries and the academy in this context. Finally, he discussed the issue of the response for and support of artistic production in the academy.
