IMU Sustainability Club and Sustainability Office Recycled Waste Fabrics by Making Puppets with an “Upcycling Workshop”

Istanbul Medeniyet University Sustainability Office and IMU Sustainability Club continue to develop projects to reduce environmental footprint.

IMU Sustainability Club organized a “Puppet Making with Upcycling” workshop in cooperation with the Sustainability Office in order to reduce waste generation. Ayça ÇELİKBİLEK, Research Assistant at IMU Sustainability Office, facilitated the workshop held on Friday, April 05, 2024 at Istanbul Medeniyet University Sustainability Office. The workshop was open to the participation of all our students, staff and the public.

In the upcycling workshop organized as part of the workshop series, finger puppets were produced from collected waste fabric and felt. In addition to the materials provided by the Sustainability Club, unused materials brought by the participants from their homes were also utilized in the production of the puppets. Previously collected waste paper was used to make the puppet molds. Thus, the consumption of new resources was minimized by reusing resources in the production process. A total of 23 finger puppets were produced during the three-hour workshop.

After the workshop, the second of which will be held on April 19, 2024, all the puppets produced will be sent to pre-school education classes all around Turkey on April 23rd.

Collaborating to reduce the amount of waste produced within the campus areas and to produce corporate responsibility projects to support the zero waste policy of our University, IMU Sustainability Club and Sustainability Office project team informed that recycling and upcycling activities will continue with different materials and concepts.
