IMU Sustainability Student Club Transformed Pet Bottles into Game Molds

Istanbul Medeniyet University Sustainability Student Club (IMUSUS) continues its waste recycling activities without slowing down. In the plastic recycling workshop established in cooperation with Tylman Design and Sustainability Office, “Pet To Filament Recycling Workshop” was organized on April 16, 2025 using two PETmachines. A total of 6 people attended the event, which was open to community members. The workshop was facilitated by Res. Asst. Furkan Eruçar and Res. Asst. Ayça Çelikbilek and Sustainability Office employee Musa Sal was the facilitator of the workshop.

In the workshops, first of all, the academic advisor of IMU Sustainability Student Club, Res. Asst. Ayça ÇELİKBİLEK, gave information about the plastic recycling projects they carry out as a community. ÇELİKBİLEK pointed out that while social responsibility projects are produced in many parts of Turkey regarding plastic lids, almost no projects are produced regarding the bottles to which these lids belong. ÇELİKBİLEK stated that these plastic bottles, in addition to producing waste, are lightweight and fly in the wind, so they are mixed into water resources and cause many negative consequences such as marine pollution and threatening the lives of marine life. ÇELİKBİLEK stated that all members of the community are sensitive about environmental pollution and therefore they attach special importance to waste management in their social responsibility projects. ÇELİKBİLEK pointed out that their aim is to recycle the wastes produced within the campus areas on site and thus they will both reduce the amount of energy needed for recycling and ensure the recycling of wastes with less carbon emissions. He emphasized that the work to be carried out within this workshop will form an important part of Istanbul Medeniyet University’s 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) programs, which include reducing, reusing and recycling waste.

After the general information about the project, the Head of IMUSUS Student Club, Res. Asst. Furkan Eruçar introduced the working principle and usage of PETmachine designed by Tylman Design. After the participants acquired basic machine knowledge, the workshop applications started. At this stage, PET bottles were turned into filaments and transformed into various products through 3D printers.

A total of 770 grams of waste PET was recycled during the workshop. In the continuation of the event, the participants produced 20 play dough molds with 3D printers using these filaments.

IMU Sustainability Community stated that those who want to get information about the project and PET recycling activities can follow @surdurulebilir_imu Instagram account.
