Our Medeniyet Gemisi Student Club Participated in AFAD Training for Preparedness for Natural Disasters

Medeniyet Gemisi Student Club held the “AFAD TRAINING” event on 18 December 2021. The participants were transported to the AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) Disaster Training Center in Bakirkoy by a vehicle departing from the South Campus of Istanbul Medeniyet University.

Medeniyet Gemisi Student Club decided to organize this event due to the increasing natural disasters in our country and the earthquake risk that already exists in our cities, especially in Istanbul. In the training, first of all, AFAD experts gave theoretical information on the types of natural disasters, the ways of protection from disasters, the points to be considered for disaster risk reduction and etc. The experts emphasized the importance of resilient buildings and urban transformation in our city where the earthquake risk is high.

After the theoretical briefing, the debris fields were examined in order to observe the damage caused by the disasters. The participants, who experienced the severity of the three major earthquakes that took place in our country in the past years, through earthquake simulation, were explained how crisis management and emotional control should be in the event of an earthquake. The experts informed the students about the known misconceptions about the earthquake and how to be protected from the earthquake. Finally, they give information about the severity of the flood disaster and the correct positioning during the disaster with the flood simulation.

At the end of the training program offered to 50 students free of charge, the students were given e-participation certificates.
