Our Sociology Club Starts a Sign Language Training Workshop

Sociology Club of our university has started a Sign Language Training Workshop that will continue for 15 weeks. The workshop, which was started with the slogan “Sign Language is for Removing Barriers” and which attracted great demand from our university and students outside our university, will be held every Friday, starting from April 8, 2022, between 17.30-19.00 in the South Campus Ömer Halis Demir Lecture Hall.

Yunus Gültekin, Volunteer Sign Language Instructor and founding president of We Sing for Our Children Association, volunteered as the trainer of the 15-week training program. In order to better understand and communicate with the hearing-impaired individuals, who are among the disadvantaged individuals in our society, sign language training is carried out every week, accompanied by regular practices, homework and songs. The training also aims to increase the number of people who know sign language; to create an environment in which hearing-impaired individuals can better express themselves at school; and thus, to enhance inclusiveness in education.

On the first training day of the workshop, as a first step to gain a better understanding of hearing-impaired individuals, a hearing-impaired student from our university was hosted to hear his/her comments and thoughts. At the end of a training day that was both educational and entertaining, the students who participated in the workshop stated that they wanted to learn new information in education and continue their goal of removing obstacles step by step and enthusiastically.
