Istanbul Medeniyet University hosted the “Cervical Pathologies” meeting, which was held in cooperation with the Turkish Gynecology and Obstetrics Association on May 15, 2022 at Aşık Paşa Conference Hall in the South Campus of our University. The event was open to all students, staff, healthcare professionals and the general public.
The event was held in two sessions, in which cervical pathologies were discussed under a total of 9 topics. One of the prominent topics of the meeting was Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Murat GÜLTEKİN presented information about the vagen flora and basic information about HPV, a sexually transmitted disease. The discussions underlined that high-risk HPV can cause numerous problems for human health and different diseases including cancer, and developments and experiences regarding the diagnosis and treatment methods of the disease were discussed. Presenting information on the National Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Turkey, Didem SOYSAL stated that cervical cancer is an important health problem in women, that 99.9% of patients with cervical cancer are found to have HPV DNA, and emphasized the importance of regular screening for public health in order to identify patients at risk. She emphasized that access to these screenings for all women in the health system is of great importance for the treatment of cervical cancer. In this context, she stated that under the conditions of our country, community-based screening studies are carried out in women starting at the age of 30 and ending at the age of 65 and are repeated every five years. Following the related discussions, Ateş KARATEKE presented the latest situation in HPV vaccines and the evaluations of the World Health Organization on the benefit-harm ratio of HPV vaccines. In the second session of the meeting; surgical management of vulva-vagina premalignant lesions, preinvasive cervical pathologies and management of early stage cervical cancer were discussed. In these discussions, health risks that may occur in diseases resulting in cancer and recommendations for the treatment of the disease were included.
