Rescue Excavation Works in Fethiye Castle Continue in Collaboration with IMU Department of Art History

Excavations continue in Fethiye Castle, which is located in Fethiye District of Muğla, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums and Istanbul Medeniyet University. In the castle, under the scientific consultancy of Prof. Dr. Kadir PEKTAŞ, a faculty member of our University, cleaning works and rescue excavations are carried out for the recording and protection of cultural heritage.

Fethiye Castle Excavation Scientific Advisor Prof. Dr. Kadir PEKTAŞ said that besides scientific excavation and research of Fethiye Castle, which is located in the district center, it is aimed to bring the artifact to tourism. PEKTAŞ stated that the works for the cleaning of the interior spaces, forward-looking landscaping and restoration projects are continuing, and added that with the project to be prepared after the works, the castle will be a more perceptible and navigable place.

PEKTAŞ also stated that there are some physical difficulties in visiting the castle due to geographical conditions, and that the castle will be brought into tourism by creating travel routes. He expressed that the people of the region and visitors showed interest in the castle and mentioned that a place thought to be an odeon (theatre) emerged during the studies. Finally, PEKTAŞ said that ceramics, cannonballs and plenty of coins were found during the excavations and added that the castle was used during the Menteşe Principality and the Ottoman Period.
