The Istanbul Archaeology Museums hold significant importance both globally and for our country due to its historical and cultural heritage, as well as its collection of over one million artifacts.
Art History Club of our University organized a trip to the Istanbul Archaeology Museums on December 18, 2022, to explore and promote the cultural and historical heritage of our region. The guidance for the trip was provided by the club advisor, Res. Asst. Yasin SAYGILI.
During the visit, the club members had the opportunity to examine artifacts from different periods by exploring the three main sections of the museum. In the first section, they explored the Archaeology Museum, where numerous sculptures from the Roman era are exhibited. The club members closely examined intricately carved sculptures, discovering the subtleties and aesthetic values of Roman art.
At the Museum of Ancient Oriental Works, the club members had the chance to familiarize themselves with artworks from the Byzantine period. Icons, mosaics, glassware, and other religious objects provided significant insights into the religious life and art of the Byzantine Empire. The club members gained a better understanding of the symbolic meanings of these artworks and the cultural and religious fabric of the Byzantine era.
Lastly, they visited the Tiled Pavilion Museum, which showcases ceramic works from the Ottoman period. The participants had the opportunity to learn about the rich ceramic tradition and techniques of the Ottoman Empire. Colorfully tiled domes, ceramic plates, and vases showcased the aesthetic sensibilities and artistic richness of the Ottoman era.
After exploring all sections of the museum, the participants discussed the importance of the Istanbul Archaeology Museums in preserving the cultural and historical heritage, as well as its significant role in the development of museology in our country. The trip concluded with these discussions.
