The Concepts of Environmental Psychology and Space Discussed at the Fourth Seminar of “Mimarlık Araştırmaları” Series

The fourth seminar of the “Mimarlık Araştırmaları” seminar series organized by Istanbul Medeniyet University, Department of Architecture, was held online on 11 August 2021, 14:00, with the presentation of Assoc. Prof. Emine Köseoğlu, from Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University.

In her presentation titled “Çevresel Psikoloji ve Mekan Kavramı(The Concept of Environmental Psychology and Space), Köseoğlu provided examples of a scientific field that began to become systematized in the 1960s under the name Environmental Psychology. The presentation discussed the impact of the environment on people within the context of the science of environmental psychology. The impact of architecture on health and psychological well-being, as well as the impact of space on individuals, were discussed. The positive psychological effects that space design can achieve were emphasized. Köseoğlu underlined the effects that the environment, architectural space, and space quality can have on individuals. Furthermore, she explained the design approach required to avoid creating spaces that may have a negative impact on the environment.

The seminar concluded with a discussion and question-and-answer session on the potential contribution of environmental psychology to architectural research and education.
