TOMIMEUs ERASMUS KA2 Project Continues to Generate Inclusive Museum Experiences for Persons with Sensory Disabilities

An EU Erasmus KA2 project titled “Towards a Multisensory and Inclusive Museum for Individuals with Sensory Disabilities (ToMiMEUs)” (code 2019-1-RO01-KA202-063245), for which our University is a project partner, continues to initiate applications to reduce inequality.

As part of the project, events involving inclusive learning experiences (IO5) were held by the members of our Faculty of Education Sciences at Istanbul Railway Museum on January 16, 2022. Developed in cooperation with the project partner Turkish State Railways (TCDD), an event called “Passengers to the train, the train is leaving!” was held with the participation of children between the ages of 6 and 12 with various levels of visual and hearing impairment.

Accompanied by museum staff members specially trained within the scope of the project, the children were first introduced to the museum. Afterwards, they experienced various materials and roles in the museum through creative drama activities. Then, the children drew and painted pictures about the environment and things they knew and experienced through the activity. After the art activities, our University Project Coordinator Dr. Emine Ayyıldız, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özcan Erkan Akgün, Dr. Ayşe Tuğba Öner, and research assistant H. Sümeyra Bilici Albayrak held interviews with the children and their parents. After the eventswere completed, the evaluation meeting of the day was held and it was decided to continue the integrative learning activities in February, March, and April.

The fourth transnational partners meeting of the TOMIMEUs ERASMUS KA2 Project was held in Istanbul on 24-25 January 2022. The project meeting was hosted by TCDD and in partnership with Istanbul Medeniyet University, represented by Project Coordinator Dr. Emine Ayyıldız, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özcan Erkan Akgün, Dr. Ayşe Tuğba Öner, and research assistant H. Sümeyra Bilici Albayrak. Our faculty members shared information about the integrative learning activities held at Istanbul Railway Museum on January 16, 2022. Project partners from Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Greece were also present in the meeting, where plans were made for the “Best Practices Guide (IO6)” Booklet and the “Multiplier Event” to be held by our University in April.
