IMU Art History Club organized a trip to two significant locations within the Sultanahmet Urban Archaeological Site, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is recognized as the historical center of Istanbul. The excursion took place on December 4, 2022, and was guided by the club’s advisor, Res. Asst. Yasin SAYGILI.
The first stop on the itinerary was the Great Palace Mosaics Museum, which houses a section of the Great Palace Ruins. This museum showcases remnants and mosaics from the Byzantine Empire era. Club members had the opportunity to observe the palace ruins and examine the aesthetic and symbolic meanings of the mosaics, gaining a deeper understanding of the development of Byzantine period art. They also learned about the process of restoring the mosaics and methods of preservation, raising awareness about the conservation and restoration of historical artifacts and cultural heritage.
The second destination of the trip was Topkapı Palace, an important structure that served as a residence during various periods of the Ottoman Empire. Club members explored the palace’s private chambers, throne halls, harem section, and museums, allowing them to trace the traces of Ottoman era art and lifestyle. They also gained an in-depth understanding of the palace’s administrative structure, daily life, and the preservation of artistic works and cultural heritage.
The trip involved the examination of artifacts and structures from different periods, and it concluded after the completion of the route and the answering of participant questions.
