An Event on Violence in Healthcare and its Legal Dimensions is Held

The collaboration between the Medeniyet Health Student Club of our university and Istanbul Medeniyet University Student Commission of the Turkish Nurses Association (THDÖK) has resulted in an event that aims to emphasize the increasing significance of violence in the healthcare sector and to raise awareness among future healthcare professionals. The event was held online on April 6, 2022, from 20:30 to 22:00 and garnered significant interest from students and individuals interested in the healthcare sector.

In recent years, violence in healthcare has become a significant problem in Turkey, with an increasing number of cases targeting healthcare workers. Such incidents not only cause physical and psychological harm to healthcare professionals but also have significant legal implications to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services and maintain their quality.

The event was moderated by Lect.Dr. Özlem AKARSU. The first guest of the program was Social Worker Zeliha KİLİMCİ, who extensively discussed the “Safety of Healthcare Workers and White Code” under the topic of white code application. KİLİMCİ provided detailed information on what a white code is, the steps to be taken in a white code situation, and the processes for concluding a white code.

The second guest of the event was Lawyer Emrullah BURKAY. BURKAY, in his presentation titled “The Legal Dimension of Violence Against Healthcare Workers,” explained the legal rights of healthcare workers who experience violence and the complaint processes. He provided a detailed explanation of how the legal processes unfold after a white code situation and the rights healthcare workers have when subjected to violence.

The event was enriched with current media examples and provided participants with the opportunity to learn more about the legal aspect of violence in healthcare and the judicial system. Additionally, participants had the chance to ask questions to experts through Q&A sessions, allowing them to gain further insights.
