An Event was Organized for Secondary School Students to Promote Disaster Knowledge and Awareness in Response to Crises through Theater

Within the scope of the “Cooperation in Education Implementation Protocol” developed through the collaboration of the Rectorate of Istanbul Medeniyet University and Kartal District Directorate of National Education with the aim of determining the level of knowledge and awareness of school-age children about disasters that cause crises and increasing the level of disaster knowledge and awareness for disaster risk reduction with the training program to be carried out through theater, the project titled “Raising Disaster Knowledge and Awareness against Crises through Theater” was carried out by Project Executive Director Assoc.Prof.Dr. Rujnan TUNA and project team members including Prof.Dr. Ayşe OKANLI, Prof.Dr. Aynur AYTEKİN ÖZDEMİR, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nesrin İLHAN, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Berna DİNCER, Asst.Prof.Dr. Hacer ATAMAN, Asst.Prof.Dr. Cemile SAVCI, and MSc. Teacher Emine BARBAROS.

In  the project carried out in 3 stages, the first stage involved the preparation of the themes for the training on “Raising Disaster Knowledge and Awareness against Crises through Theater”. At this stage, the research team identified four themes for the trainings by classifying the themes for gaining disaster knowledge and awareness against crises for secondary school students. Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nursing 2nd grade students took active roles as actors in the training with theater method. On 28.10.2022 at 10:00-11:00 in Cevizli Conference Hall, theater performances were staged for 146 students studying in 7th grade at Istanbul / Kartal – Şehit Timur Aktemur Secondary School about;

– The importance of what to do and what not to do during an earthquake

– Providing general information about disasters and things to be considered in other disaster situations,

– The importance of what to do and not to do in case of fire and

– The importance of what to do and what not to do in the event of a flood.
