Our Faculty Members’ Book Chapter on Motivation in Early Childhood has been Published

IMU Department of Basic Education faculty members Dr.Hande ARSLAN ÇİFTÇİ and Dr.Emine AYYILDIZ, sought answers to the questions of what intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is in early childhood and how intrinsic motivation is supported in the chapter on “Motivation in Early Childhood”, included in the book titled “Eğitimde Motivasyon: Kuramsal Arka Plan, Gelişimsel Dönemler ve Öğrenme­Öğretme” (Motivation in Education: Theoretical Background, Developmental Periods and Learning-Teaching), which was authored by the academicians of our Faculty of Education Sciences and published in two editions in 2022.

“What drives children to perform a behavior? So, what are the underlying reasons why they tend to repeat that behavior over and over again? When challenged, why do some kids keep trying while others just give up?” Regardless of their developmental status, all children are born with an innate curiosity to explore the world. However, many children lose this motivation or replace it with extrinsically motivated learning strategies due to some developmentally inappropriate behaviors and approaches they encounter both at home and when they start school. Therefore, early childhood is very important for establishing and strengthening intrinsic motivation that will last a lifetime.

Based on this, the authors of this book chapter provide the theoretical framework of motivation in early childhood, the evaluation of motivation in this age group and the factors affecting motivation and the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on learning, in order to create a quality early childhood education system and to create a guide that can be used in both family education and teacher training and included some suggestions to support motivation in early childhood.
